Yaphank is a quaint Suffolk County hamlet. Home to the German American Settlement League a/k/a “Camp Siegfried.”
Camp Siegfried consisted of 54 wooded acres that served as a summer camp for American Nazi Youth. By 1935, Hitler supplied teachers, textbooks and uniforms. The League named the main street after him. Nazi flags festooned the grounds, alongside photos of Hitler. Men wore Nazi uniforms.
In 1938, 40,000 people attended the annual German Day festivities. Then came World War II. The FBI seized the camp.
Yaphank is now the headquarters of the Suffolk County Police Department (“SCPD”). The League got the grounds back. But Adolf Hitler Street had to be renamed. Goebbels is gone too.
Today the German American Settlement League is a private community. Up until 2015 only people of “German extraction” could live there. That ended when an outraged German couple – the Kneers – sued.
The Kneers couldn’t advertise the sale of their home in the newspaper as per Settlement By-Laws. That kept non-Germans out.
