Police Are Accomplices to The Murder Of Jo’Anna Bird
This murder comes down to a 781-page file kept secret by the Nassau County Police Department for more than a decade. It detailed the repeated policing failures and overt actions taken by the police that caused the murder of a young mother in 2009.
Jo’Anna Bird a very pretty young woman made a mistake. She fell, only for short time, for a purported member of the Bloods named Leonardo Valdez Cruz a.k.a. Pito.
What is a Blood. The Bloods are a primarily African American street gang that started in L.A. I have no idea how the Bloods would let Pito into the gang. Pito is a bitch. A fat diminutive punk of Central American extraction. Put it this way. Bloods play basketball. Pito can’t jump.
What are the Bloods good at. In L.A. they deal drugs. In L.A. they’re good at driving a car past a person they want to kill and shooting at the person. All of the bullets miss the intended target but manage to kill just about everyone else on the street.
Bloods really don’t do much at all on Long Island except call themselves Bloods.
Pito and the Cops
When Pito the purported “Blood” met the Nassau County Cops he met people that were even bigger dicks then him.
Pito became Jo’Anna Bird’s boyfriend. Pito turned out to be jealous and cruel. Jo’Anna Bird who lacked what all women and girls need – me as their big brother – broke it off with Pito. But Pito would have none of it. Over a period of time he would stalk Jo’Anna. He tased her. Beat her. He threw her in the trunk of his car near her home where she lived with her mother and drove off. He raped her. And beat her some more. All on a regular basis on Long Island.
And Jo’Anna did what she was supposed to do. She went to the police. She got Order of Protection after Order of Protection. The only problem was what I told victims of domestic violence about Orders of Protection when I was a street crime prosecutor. “It’s piece of paper. It can’t stop a bullet or a knife or someone’s hands.”
Pito was a snitch or at least he made high flying Nassau cops and detectives think he was. And the Bloods had a big name. Every Nassau cop and detective wanted to arrest some of these Bloods. So when Pito came around Jo’Anna’s house the cops would just say “Pito go home.”
I had clients violate Orders of Protection at the behest of their ex-girlfriends who called the clients and said they wanted to see them again. The clients went to jail.
Pito didn’t go to jail no matter how much bad stuff he did to Jo’Anna. No matter how much Jo’Anna and her mother begged the cops. When he was in jail for this or that Pito would send Jo’Anna letters consisting of diagrams of how he was going to killer her. Various drawings. A tombstone with Jo’Anna’s name written on it with the epitaph:
Joanna a dead cunt who left behind 2 beautiful kids that really needed her more then anything in this whole world.
What is the Meaning of all of This
If Jo’Anna was my daughter or baby sister Pito would be dead with a soccer ball stuffed up his ass and a basketball jammed down his throat.
Jo’Anna showed these violent drawings and notes to Nassau cops who did nothing.
In fact brave Nassau County Detective JEFFREY RAYMOND who was fully familiar with the violent proclivities of Pito, got Pito released from custody two days before he killed Jo’Anna. According to Pito – Pito “played RAYMOND.” He promised RAYMOND a wealth of information that would get Bloods locked up if RAYMOND would get him out of jail.
Pito went to Jo’Anna’s house and like he once promised in one of his writings he stabbed her to death. Brave Pito stabbed this pretty little girl more times than the Medical Examiner could even count. The Medical Examiner when he got into the hundreds – as in hundreds of stab wounds – threw his hands up in the air and got downright existential when he said:

He stopped counting, shut off the lights, and went home.
An Internal Affairs investigation ended up charging eleven police officers, one detective and two sergeants with up to eight counts each for misconduct in connection with the killing. The so called punishments ranged from loss of four hours of sick leave and vacation time to the most severe punishment – the loss of 24 days of accrued sick and vacation time. One officer had to undergo retraining but I don’t think you can train someone to not be a reprobate.
No one was suspended, fired or demoted in rank. Five of the fourteen have been promoted. Two of them were made president and financial secretary of the Police Benevolent Association.
Our hero detective RAYMOND is now a commanding officer of the department’s burglary squad where he brings his extreme intelligence and sense of decency.
The police commissioner and the department refused to release the investigative file. The PBA through MAGA County Executive Edward Mangano made sure the miscreant cops were not punished. Fabled PBA head James T. Carver is excellent at getting his killer cops off – and he got Mangano’s ear with PBA cash and clout. Republicans are law and order guys.
Mangano started his 12 year federal prison sentence in 2022 – not for the death of Jo’Anna Bird. Just plain old corruption – can you imagine the man accepted bribes – in which his wife played a big role (more MAGA family values)
Here’s the comic twist. Fabled civil rights attorney Frederick “Show me the Money” Brewington sued the police, the county and anyone else he could think of. And he got the 781-page IAB file. The police and County attorneys said, “No Mas.” They didn’t want to take this cluster fuck to trial. But “Show Me the Money” Brewington wanted 7.7 million dollars. And Nassau was broke in part from paying its idiot cops hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
PBA head James T. Carver’s Face Caught on Fire as a Child (His Mom snuffed it out with an Ice Pick)
So the lawyers hatched a scheme. Show the Nassau County legislature the 781-page file and when they read it – and see what abject assholes their cops are – they’ll be happy to raise taxes to pay that 7.7 million. (Hell that’s well over $2.5 million to “Show me the Money” Brewington for just showing up) – Jo’Anna gets nothing because she’s dead and buried. Problem was that the cops were protective of this file. Carver was protective of this file. And the Court had earlier handed down a protective order that said only the lawyers could see this file.
In furtherance of the scheme the lawyers got a revised Protective Order that allowed the Nassau County Legislature to see the file. But members of the legislature were sworn to secrecy and could not let the taxpayers know what creepy dicks their cops, that they paid millions of dollar to, really were. Poor Schmitty
The legislature took one look at that report and lost their nuts. They produced 7.7 million pretty quickly. Up went the property taxes. But one of the legislators was so mortified he forgot the protective order. He told the news this:
‘“The case demonstrates a top to bottom failure of Nassau’s police department.’ So says Nassau Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt, telling News 12 he was disgusted by what he learned after reviewing an internal affairs investigation kept confidential by court order.’”
James T. Carver was pissed. But there was more from poor Legislator Schmitt:
“There are 22 police officers in this county who were mentioned in that confidential internal affairs report who ought to be ashamed to look at themselves in the mirror every morning when they get up to shave, much less be wearing the badge,” Schmitt said. “Orders of protection were ignored . . . mandatory arrests were called for and not performed, giving a cell phone to the prisoner when he was behind bars and allowing him to call the victim 35-40 times, and on and on and on.”
Boy … oh boy. Schmitt’s ass was grass.
The PBA intervened in the Federal Lawsuit brought by Frederick “Show Me the Money” Brewington and demanded Schmitt’s head. In the end elderly Judge Arthur D. Spatt who I won a case in front of and I always found entertaining – well Spatt directed that poor Schmitt be sanctioned $2,500.00 dollars of his own personal money for telling Nassau County taxpayers what losers their overpaid cops were.

Steady Freddie
Even Frederick “Show Me the Money” Brewington – although he usually just cares about the money and the press conference – felt civically inclined to get the IAB file out there. When he simply suggested it Carver and the Nassau County PBA went nuts and filed papers saying that Brewington was in contempt of Court. The Court actually got it right this time and said,
wait a minute … he hasn’t done anything yet.
